Twitter is rife with earthquakes in Delhi

Already we are in the midst of a pandemic from COVID-19 virus, the western and northern borders are being attacked by swarms of locusts, Toxic styrene Gas leakages from LG polymer plant  in Vizag, Amphan cyclone in West Bengal and last but not the least Twitter is rife with earthquakes in Delhi and luckily of lesser magnitudes without any damages. What’s not in a span of just three to four months we are subjected to all kinds of calamities. This makes us to be furthermore cautious of disaster management response in our homes. Magzblog tries to collate important information on sustenance from earthquakes especially at our homes.

What is an earthquake?

Earth quakes are sudden tremors which  can occur if there is a slip or a fault lines in tectonic plates of earth.   The tectonic plates are always slowly moving, but when they get stuck at their edges due to friction and when the stress on the edge overcomes friction  there is an earthquake that releases energy in waves that travel through the earths crust and cause the shaking to occur.  The bureau of Indian standards has classified regions in India into four seismic zones on the basis of historical seismic activity. These are zones II, III, IV and V. Among these Zone V is the most seismically active region and zone II is the least active.

Learn what to do during an earthquake

Find out the zone in which you are living. A seismic zone wise map is available as prepared by National Disaster Management Authority and Ministry of earth sciences, govt of India. Just do a study prepare your homes accordingly and find out of what structure is your house made. Assess its structure and content and formulate a remedy and repair strategy if you strongly feel so. By the time if we get slightly unlucky and if there is an earthquake happening, here is what to do?

During an earthquake if you are indoors

  • Take cover under a sturdy furniture such as dining table study table which is not against any wall. If there is no such a thing cover your face and head and crouch in a corner of a building
  • Do not hurry and please do not use an elevator
  • Stay away from glass or a window
  • Stay inside until the house until shaking stops and then go outside. Most of the times injury happens during movement of people during the quake and people are injured by falling objects. So please avoid it.
  • Electricity may pop off, water pipes may break, so be prepared for such conditions.

If you are outdoors

  • Stay outdoors and move away from buildings, trees streetlights and lamp post.
  • If you are in a carstop as quickly and safely as possible to a side of the road and stay safe in the car.
  • Do not stop the car  near buildings.
  • Do not  drive the vehicles over bridges
  • If you are in a public transport system get familiar with disaster management plans and follow accordingly especially in the subways and metro trains.

If you are trapped under a debris

  • Do not light any matches,
  • Cover your mouth with hand kerchief
  • Tap on a wall or metal surface for some sound as an indication
  • If you have a whistle it is advantageous blow it,
  • Do not shout and get physically exhausted.

When the quake stops

  • Check for injuries
  • It is wise if you have a battery powered radio or a mobile phone with radio for emergency updates
  • If you are in a coastal area be aware of tsunamis
  • Wear shoes when you are walking over the debris

Check for hazards

  • Small fires may happen  in your house,  torch is useful to inspect your home in darkness
  • Be prepared for after shocks
  • Check water and food supplies
  • Switch of the power supply if you suspect damage to wiring component.
  • Check the building for cracks or damages
  • Check gas and other appliances for any leak

Earth quake safety checklist

  • Portable battery powered radio or a mobile phone can be important for emergency updates
  • First aid kit will be of help
  • Fire extinguishers installed at various places of your home or apartment and know to use it properly.
  • Important needs such as some money, eatables, clothes, spectacles, diapers and items of infants to be always kept ready as an emergency response kit.
  • If there is an disabled individual in your house practice their evacuation plans before hand.
  • Some tools such as pliers and wrenches will be useful and handy during times of help.
  • Important papers such as cash, insurance and other legal documents can be stored in a easily retrievable place.
  • In cold areas and winters winter clothing like jackets sweaters and mufflers are essential.
There are many earthquake engineering education programs taken up in India after the Bhuj Gujarat episode, earth quake resistant designs and construction of new structures with seismic strengthening and retrofitting of lifeline and priority structures are taking place. Still by and large  awareness and preparedness is always essential to sustain any kind of a disaster response for which every individual must be acquainted with the disaster management plan. large communities and apartments can plan a rehersal drills often for safety and times of need.

This post was just an effort to drop insight and  brief readers on preparedness for an untimely earthquake. An elaborate preparedness guide from Govt of India is given in the link https://nidm.gov.in/PDF/safety/earthquake/link17.pdf
