    World Environment Day

    On the 5th of June the world celebrated the world environment day with the theme 'biodiversity' after 'air polution' from the previous year. The celebration is being hosted in Columbia in partnership with Germany. It is being celebrated to create awareness in the minds of people on emerging environmental challenges of pollution, population, climate change, to preserve biodiversity and waste management towards global environment sustenance. So what is the significance of this  Environmental sustenance from India's stand point around world environment day? Magzblog highlights the awareness and campaigns the importance on environment sustenance.

    Green house effect

    India is the fastest developing countries in the world. You will be surprised that it is the fourth largest emitter of green house gases in the world. Greenhouse gases are those gases in the atmosphere that trap heat from the sun and helps the earth's climate habitable for the life to thrive in it. There is a fine balance between heat radiation from the sun and trapping of excess temperature by natural green house gases on earths surface for maintaining the earth surface temperature. This fine balance is being unbalanced by man made green house gases emissions from uncontrolled irrational activity called green house gas effect. There is production of excess of green house gas emission such as CO2, methane, Nitrous oxide and even water vapour that are let out into the atmosphere constantly paving the way for increasing the temperature of earth atmosphere with long lasting effects. This cumulatively has lead to the temperature of the earth's surface increasing globally by 0.85°C since the beginning of the 20th century and increase in sea level more specifically to 8 cm of rise from 1993.

    So what source makes green house effect increase?

    The main sources of green house gases due to human activity are 
    • burning fossil fuels leading to higher carbon dioxide concentrations
    • land use change via agriculture, methane from livestock and deforestation
    • Industrial process like cement manufacture, vehicle emissions,
    • use of Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) has increased in refrigeration systems, and use of CFCs and halons used in fire triangle suppression systems and manufacturing processes are some of the broad examples to highlight the causes making  green house effect to increase and a point of global concern.

    So what will be the impact?

    A complex shift is happening caused by increasing green house gas concentrations which are now affecting our planets weather and climate system which is referred to as climate change. The rising of earth temperature is called global warming. These changes further propounds extreme weather change events, melts glaciers, rises sea level, instigates forest fires, leading to shifting wildlife population, disrupt food production and many more unfathomable impacts and irreversible repercussions.

    Over the years, the intensity of cyclones have increased in all the continents. This is because of the increase in surface temperature of sea water forming increased water vapor content. So when there is a depression getting created in the sea cyclone forms with more water vapor content, it is carried into the landfall resulting in heavy precipitation causing heavy storms, heavy rains and floods. In a month we have witnessed two cyclones Amphan in the east coast and Nisagra in the west coast.

    Another implication of rise in levels of Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has lead to degradation of aquatic life in the ocean. The diffusion of CO2 in the large oceanic water bodies of the earth is reducing its alkalinity posing a threat to the under water living creatures and bio systems such as coral reef, star fishes, under water snails and all those sea organisms which are shielded by exoskeleton of calcium carbonate are being endangered due to the water forming weak acid (H2O+CO2).

    Already India is facing the key environmental challenges which includes air pollution, growing water scarcity with declining levels of groundwater, increased water pollution, poor management of wastes, insufficient forest preservation,quality loss of biodiversity, soil degradation and increasing frequency of natural disasters such as droughts and floods. Furthermore, Greenhouse gases have far-ranging health effects too. They contribute to air pollution which in turn cause respiratory disease from smog and suspended dust particles affecting air quality index. Remember Delhi was covered by thick smog for many days just a few months before.

    These challenges are Compounded by the demands of India's rising population. These challenges are adversely adding pressure on India’s environmental resources. We all make tall claims of growth in economy, but Growth of India’s economy itself will severely tax on India’s natural resource base, and critical natural resource management is the need of the hour to sustainably manage these resources in the immediate future. All these impacts will have global implications endangering sharing of natural resources, geopolitical unrest and basic life sustenance.

    Global implications?

    Scarcity of food and water leading to limited food production will become a huge threat. On one side is the increase in population on the other side dwindling of natural resource such as water to service agriculture. There are over 200 major rivers in the world which cross international boundaries and these are going to be climax for political and military tensions going forward. Asia has 60 per cent of the world’s population, but only 36 per cent of available water, and the Middle East and North Africa has 6 per cent of world population, but less than 2 per cent of the water. Water scarcity will become an issue and there will be a debate around the conflicting needs of the domestic, agricultural and industrial use of water. There could be mass migration of people moving from North Africa and the Middle East.

    Risk mitigation 

    More trees to be planted, adopt afforestation and prevent deforestation in the name of urbanization. Forest areas to be preserved as invaluable treasures. It is not for oxygen that we really require trees but for effective absorption of carbon dioxide. Large forests areas of the planet such as amazon are not really of significance in terms as oxygen producers but definitely as Carbon dioxide assimilators and plays the prime role in reducing excess green house emissions of carbon dioxide. 


    Similarly on the surface of ocean the phytoplankton's are responsible for reduction in green house emissions. Phytoplankton's are mostly microscopic, single-celled photosynthetic organisms that live suspended in water. Like land plants, they take up carbon dioxide, make carbohydrates using light energy, and release oxygen. They are what is known as primary producers of the ocean; the organisms that form the base of the food chain.  Pollutants from moving ships, Oil mixing with water causing pollution, large accumulation of waste plastic materials in seas etc., are a threat to this thriving biodiversity, phytoplankton's and ecology of oceans which has to be protected from chemical  pollutants.

    Preserving the biodiversity and restoring the already fragmented ecosystems, to not only fight climate crisis but also to ensure food security, water supply and safety of our people is vital. The people, governments and all other stakeholders need to intensify their efforts for protecting nature and finding sustainable solutions in every sphere of life, the awareness is to be reached doorstep of every household.
    Conserve Biodiversity

     Reduction in  carbon dioxide emission are envisaged through policies, legislation, research updates, institutional mechanism, strict monitoring, adoption of remediation technology, environmental information and improved public awareness highlighting the importance of environmental sustenance. 

    Intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC)

    The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is (IPCC) an intergovernmental body of the United Nations headquartered in Geneva switzerland that is dedicated to providing the world with objective, scientific information relevant to understanding of the risks posed by humans towards green house gas emissions and climate change. The IPCC was created to provide policymakers with regular scientific assessments on climate change its implications and potential future risks as well as put forward adaptation and mitigation options and serve to identify ways and means of reducing green house emissions and reduce global warming. Individual nations must diligently channelize their efforts from such scientific options and capitalize from the benefits. Intercontinental cooperation must be fostered.

    National Action plan on climate change (NAPCC)

    In 2008 Indian govt launched a National Action plan on climate change (NAPCC)  an initiative to identify eight core “national missions”, which deal with mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions that were causing climate change as well as adaptation to climate change effects. They are national solar mission, national mission for enhanced energy efficiency mission, national mission on sustainable habitat, national water mission, national mission for sustaining himalayan Ecosystem, national mission for green India, national mission for sustainable agriculture and national mission for strategic knowledge for climate change. In 2009, India also committed to reducing the country’s emissions intensity by 20-25% by 2020 from a 2005 baseline. NAPCC programs are funded by National bank for agricultural development NABARD.

    Ministry of Earth sciences stated that the rate of change of sea level off Mumbai is 0.74 mm per year between 1878-2005. Recently, the Govt is planning to set up a national coastal mission under the 8 point national action plan (NAPCC). Some of these measures include strengthening natural shields against extreme weather conditions to protect shorelines, adaptation, improved employment generation opportunities for coastal communities to reduce pressure on coastal and marine ecosystems and enhancing productivity of coastal and marine ecosystems in a sustainable manner. This comes after recent hike in nature’s skirmishes along coastal areas.

    Though NAPCC is a comprehensive action plan which outlines measures on climate change-related adaptation and mitigation while simultaneously advancing development much more work done is to be exercised by bringing together all science research institutions to provide a research base and rope in Industrial business institutions that follow suit in adopting to strict clean technologies.The need of the hour is the government should frame policies in real time tangible with climate change adaptations and powered with necessary monetary allocation to implement programs and act as a strict watch dog for their effective implementation.

    Role of Indian industries

    Many Indian industry had already reduced its emissions intensity by an estimated 17.6% between 1990 and 2005 as it became more productive. Regulated carbon dioxide emissions in the telecom and aviation sectors are also bringing tangible changes while still wide disparity exist in Indian industry to regulate carbon emissions especially in micro, small and medium enterprises. It is the large scale industries and corporates with enterprising business heads has understood the implication and have embarked on a mission that really started working towards reduction in carbon foot prints.

    In spite of these measures there are constraints.There is still a lack of clear bullet list of policy and regulatory directives suited to real time climate changes. There is a limited access to clean technology which must be facilitated by the goverment machinery, there is absence of methods for foot-printing data which must be elucidated and there is inadequate institutional capacity which must be made capable and adequate.The remedy of such constraints can mitigate green hous gas emissions and alleviate climate change. Government need to see the opportunity  for employment generation from such sectors tackling green house emissions. The business industries should focus on finding a balance between promoting profitability and environmental sustainability. Ensuring this fine balancing act in a developing country like India during rapid growth will reap synergistic dividends in long term in the path of environmental sustenance.

    Some action steps

    • New fuel specifications for vehicles with reduced sulfur content.
    • Adoption of e-vehicles will be a welcome to reduce emissions from fossil fuels.
    • Oil spillage in water bodies can be cured by oil water separators and sewage treatment plants.Such bio remediation technologies can be identified and adopted.
    • Introduction of energy efficient equipment
    • use of energy efficient to solid state lighting should be adopted
    • wide adoption of renewable energy such as solar energy in domestic use and small medium sectors can be encouraged.
    • Pollution prevention and control. This include a holistic approach towards improving air quality, water quality, water supply and sanitation and a diligent waste and chemical management.
    • Sustainable management of natural resources such as water and biodiversity conservation.
    • Trans boundary issue and multilateral environment agreements

    Ha...! its the lock down 4.0 and slowly people are doubtfully crawling on to the streets with  lots of questions going on their minds. Every one is wearing a mask and there is a constant fear will I be infected by the deadly virus, how Am I to remain safe, and what all care should I take. You might imagine how insane is your life and life is not fair now with lot of restrictions. Okay is it unfair to me or is it to everyone and how do i remain safe.  To help them and to alleviate their apprehensions to achieve clarity a list of question and answers have been collated.
